Worthing is on the south coast of England, and therefore enjoys a reasonable summer!. The promenade was built for walk by the seaside that would be healthy and invigorating. The walks or promenades as they were called could be extended by the building of a pier. Worthing's first pier was built in 1862 by the Worthing Pier Company to a design by Sir Robert Rawlinson,K.C.B., the pier was originally 960' long and 18' wide. In 1887-9 it was widened to 30' and a pavilion was added at the southern end. It was to be badly damaged during a storm 1913 and by fire in 1933. Steamer trips were organised by the South Coast Steamboat Company and others.
