The Worthing we know today was born in the years following the First World War. The great new estates, which sprang up at Offington, High Salvington, Goring, East Worthing and Broadwater not only doubled Worthing's population but also brought about a fundamental change in the populations nature. The local gentry were displaced by the new middle classes, many of them coming from London. The working class communities were also transformed, not only by the influx of newcomers but also by the changing work patterns.
