The first Tramocar service started in 1924, operating initially along the seafront between the pier and Grand Avenue, stopping at the Towers (now Dolphin Lodge). Fitted with solid 20-inch by 5-inch tyres, bumps and holes in the road would jar passengers, which may explain why the service was extended to only a limited route of smoother-surfaced main thoroughfares throughout the 1930s. Steering was by means of a tiller operated by the driver's right hand, leaving his left hand free to change gear with a lever similar in appearance to that in a tramcar, hence the name Tramocar. A total of 15 Tramocars were used in service until the routes were replaced by single-deck Southdown buses in 1938

If you would like to ride in a Tramocar, there is a replica at the Amberly chalkpits museum. Which is situated in West Sussex on the B2139 mid-way between Arundel & Storrington, adjacent to Amberley Railway Station. Free car & coach parking is provided for the use of Museum visitors
